Strandings are a problem for not only whales but dolphins as well. In Ireland, two dolphins were found alive beached on the coast. While one of the dolphins died quickly, the second dolphin seemed to be completely healthy but was unwilling to swim away after being refloated. In fact, the healthy dolphin continued to call out to his companion throughout the rescue. The investigation showed that the first dolphin had a severe lung infection affecting breathing. It is likely the two had a close-knit relationship and the healthy dolphin simply followed the sick one to the beach. This highlights the extremely close social bonds that dolphins are connected by
.
