Vertical
Farming:
Balancing
production
and
energy
usage
A
Throughout
the
20th
century,
our
food
supply
increased
dramatically.
This
was
because
of
better
farming
techniques
and
more
investment.
However,
as
the
world’s
population
continues
to
grow,
experts
predict
that
food
production
will
need
to
increase
even
more.
By
2050,
developed
countries
will
need
about
70%
more
food
and
developing
nations
will
need
50%
more.
B
How
can
it
be
done?
One
option
is
vertical
farming.
Rather
than
growing
food
outside,
vertical
farming
is
mainly
indoors,
or
on
the
outside
of
skyscrapers.
These
farms
are
often
in
warehouses
or
empty
caves
where
humans
can
control
the
lighting,
climate,
humidity
and
temperature.
Water
consumption
can
also
be
minimised
by
using
nutrients.
C
Although
vertical
farming
allows
producers
to
utilise
space
and
water
more
efficiently,
and
increase
the
total
number
of
crops
they
harvest
each
year,
this
farming
process
demands
significantly
more
energy.
In
contrast
to
traditional
farming,
vertical
farming
requires
ten
to
twenty
times
more
energy
per
square
meter
of
soil.
Therefore,
some
have
argued
that
large
scale
adoption
of
vertical
farming
will
add
to
the
problem
of
excessive
energy
consumption.
D
On
the
one
hand,
future
populations
all
over
the
world
will
struggle
to
feed
themselves
without
a
dramatic
increase
in
food
supply,
but
on
the
other
hand,
as
a
global
community,
steps
need
to
be
taken
to
curb
energy
use
and
the
associated
pollution.
